What was the initiative?

Refugee Bridge Academy is a community-led mentorship and leadership development initiative that supports Afghan refugee youth in the Greater Toronto Area. Through one-on-one mentorship, skills-building workshops, networking opportunities, and community events, the initiative helps newcomer youth navigate educational pathways, career development, and
community integration. The program connects participants with Afghan professionals who provide guidance, encouragement, and practical support as youth transition into post-secondary education and early career pathways in Canada.

What was the initiative?

Refugee Bridge Academy is deeply rooted in the Afghan refugee community and emerges directly from the lived experiences and needs of Afghan newcomer youth. As a former refugee himself, Omer recognizes many of the barriers facing newly arrived youth, including limited access to mentorship, professional networks, and culturally relevant guidance. The initiative is developed in partnership with community organizations, educational institutions, volunteers, mentors, and youth themselves, ensuring that programming remains community-informed, culturally responsive, and grounded in lived experience.

How was it innovative?

Refugee Bridge Academy combines mentorship, community building, and leadership development through a refugee-led model that centers lived experience as a source of expertise. Rather than viewing newcomer youth through a deficit lens, the initiative focuses on community strengths, intergenerational knowledge-sharing, and peer support. By connecting Afghan refugee youth with professionals who have navigated similar experiences, the program creates trusted pathways to education, employment, and leadership while fostering belonging and collective empowerment.

What is Omer doing now?

Omer continues his work in community leadership, refugee inclusion, and youth empowerment. He is exploring pathways to formally establish Refugee Bridge Academy as a nonprofit organization to expand its impact and sustainability.
