What is the initiative?
Digital Pathway is an initiative designed to support Afghan refugee girls in Tajikistan who have lost access to formal education. Many are living in uncertainty while waiting for resettlement, with limited opportunities to continue learning. This program creates a supportive, community-based space where participants can build English skills, develop digital literacy, and regain confidence in their education. Through weekly sessions and peer learning, the initiative encourages connection and growth. Over time, participants step into mentorship roles, helping others learn and creating a sustainable cycle of learning, leadership, and community support.
What is your connection to your chosen community?
My connection to this community is deeply personal. I was born and raised in Afghanistan and later came to Canada as an asylum seeker, so I understand what it means to experience displacement and interrupted education. My own sister lived as a refugee in Tajikistan, where she struggled to find opportunities to continue learning while waiting for resettlement. During that time, I supported her in finding online resources and staying connected to education. Through her experience and my ongoing conversations with Afghan families and youth in Tajikistan, I have built a meaningful connection to this community and a strong understanding of their challenges and aspirations.
What are you looking forward to this year?
This year, I am most looking forward to learning alongside the community and turning this idea into something real and meaningful. I am excited to build relationships, listen closely to participants, and shape the initiative together rather than alone. I also look forward to growing as a leader, learning how to adapt, respond to challenges, and work in uncertain environments. Being part of the Fellowship community is equally important to me, as I hope to exchange ideas, learn from others’ experiences, and reflect on my own journey. Overall, I see this year as a chance to grow personally while creating something that has a lasting impact.
