People with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Ottawa

What was the initiative?

My initiative was focused on supporting high school students with learning challenges and intellectual disabilities to get involved in our community. Through mentorship, skills-based workshops, and volunteer placements, students gained experience that supported their transition our of high school and into meaningful employment.

What was the community connection?

I built a connection to the community of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Ottawa throughout university. Through the Best Buddies program, L’Arche Ottawa, and SWAM Ottawa, I developed a deep connection to this community and the people within it.

What were some significant achievements?

Development of a volunteer club at the Ottawa Technical Secondary School

Creation of community placements for students

Execution of Volunteering Workshops

Establishment of a mentorship program

How was it innovative?

Most importantly, this project created connections in our community that didn’t exist before. It focused on breaking down systemic barriers to inclusion and created change through a whole of community approach.

What is Maggie doing now?

Maggie is now working for Universities Canada in Ottawa. While that is her new full-time commitment, she continues the work she has been doing within Ottawa’s community of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
