Building Relationships Between Students and Unhoused Individuals

What is your initiative?

My goal is to improve the relationship between university students and the unhoused community in Milton-Park. These two groups live in the same neighbourhood and cross paths multiple times a day, yet for the most part have limited positive connections or interactions. My initiative will work to develop these positive relationships by educating students through workshops and volunteering, and organizing community events that nurture developing relationships alongside food, music, art, and more.

What is your connection to your chosen community?

I have existed in Milton-Park for the past three years as a resident, student, volunteer, and employee. I’ve been working in the neighbourhood for over a year with various organizations on creating cohabitation activities that support the unhoused community via harm reduction, art creation, and story telling. I’ve been able to develop so many beautiful relationships with various members of this community, as well as with students and student groups from McGill, and I can’t wait to help bring both communities better together!

What are you looking forward to this year?

I am looking forward to getting to spend time with my community, growing alongside the amazing other Pathy fellows, and learning how I can better work to help others through community organizing!
