Young Ladies for Change

What was the initiative?

Katie’s initiative aimed to provide a safe and supportive space for young women in the community, helping them enhance their confidence, leadership skills, and the ability to address priority issues such as domestic violence, unplanned pregnancy, and mental health.

What was the community connection?

Katie’s connection to the community was established through her aunt, who was a principal at a school in Arviat. While visiting her aunt, Katie developed connections with a group of young women and their families and supported them in forming the girls’ group, “Young Ladies for Change”, which became the foundation of her initiative.

How was it innovative?

The initiative was innovative because it focused on long-term, community driven empowerment rather than temporary external aid. Instead of imposing outside solutions, she sought to build leadership capacity among young women, ensuring they could sustain the group independently after her departure. The initiative addressed deep-rooted challenges like intergenerational trauma and gender inequality through mentorship and peer support. By fostering local leadership and prioritizing cultural relevance, the initiative aimed to create lasting social change, demonstrating a sustainable model for grassroots development.

What is Katie doing now?

Katie is a mother to two young daughters and works part time at a local daycare.
