Connecting Food Systems on Haida Gwaii

What was the initiative?

Clare’s initiative aimed to improve access to traditional foods and community food knowledge in the southern communities of Haida Gwaii. Initially focused on establishing a community pantry, the project expanded to include food-based educational workshops in schools and youth spaces. Clare partnered with the Skidegate Health Centre and Local Foods to School to provide culturally sensitive food education and support school lunch programs with locally sourced goods. By working with community members, educators, and health professionals, the initiative encouraged a movement toward local and traditional food security on the island.

What was the community connection?

Clare’s connection to the community was developed in 2015 when she participated in a field semester on Haida Gwaii, focusing on natural resource management as it intersects with Indigenous rights and governance. She continued to live, work, and volunteer in the community beyond that semester, learning locally-held knowledge on the harvesting and preparing of traditional foods ahead of beginning her Fellowship.

How was it innovative?

The initiative was innovative because it combined food security efforts with cultural preservation and community empowerment. Unlike traditional food banks, her pantry model prioritized community participation and knowledge-sharing, ensuring a more respectful and non-judgmental approach. She also integrated Indigenous language and storytelling into food education, weaving cultural identity into nutrition education. By fostering strong partnerships and co-developing resources like lesson plans and a food security toolkit, Clare ensured the long-term sustainability of the initiative. Her adaptable, community-driven approach made the project effective in addressing systemic food access challenges in Haida Gwaii.
